👚 Thrift stores
Mamamini
The Mamamini is an all-purpose secondhand store, and has a ton of locations in Groningen (four to be precise). They sell everything from washing machines to a range of clothes.
When people want to donate clothing, there's a good chance that it's going to the Mamamini, so there's often something new whenever you check the store.
The Mamamini can be found at the following locations:
-
Mamamini Kledingboetiek [Oosterstraat 19] Probably the most important of the locations. This Mamamini is in the center of the city, and is stocked fully with clothing of all formats. The clothing is cheap (but more expensive than in the other locations, farther from the city center), and the cashiers don't care who buys what.
-
Mamamini Damsterdiep [Damsterdiep 307] This Mamamini is mostly stocked with cutlery, dvd's and thingamabobs, but it does have a clothes section. From memory they used to have a lot of different coats, but that might not still be true. It might be worth checking when the other locations don't have what you seek.
-
Mamamini Helpman [Helper Oostsingel 15-29] A bit out of the city center is the Mamamini in Helpman. It's a nice big place. It mostly has a large variety of furniture. Cabinets, tables and closets. They also have a nice book collection.
-
Mamamini Noorderplantsoen [Noorderbinnensingel 100 ] Not focused on clothes, but Lea found some nice stuff here. Worth a visit if you live close by.
De Recessie (and other minor 2ndhands)
In Groningen there are a growing number of secondhand stores. Most of these are following the fashion trend of 'vintage clothing', however some of these have always been set on selling second hand clothes for a second hand price.
A few of those stores will be mentioned below, being ranked from closest to furthest from the city center.
-
ReShare Store [Oosterstraat 41] Found in the same street as the Mamamini Kledingboetiek mentioned above, the ReShare Store is a charity-ran secondhand (ran by the Red Cross specifically), this makes it's prices very reasonable. The ReShare Store has a nice assortment, especially in the jeans department.
-
Recessie [Oude Kijk in Het Jatstraat 54] The Recessie is one of the oldest secondhand stores in Groningen. It also has probably the biggest amount of variety of all places in Groningen. It's prices are cheap and the store manager has a very laid back personality, and does not care about who buys what. One thing to look out for at the Recessie is that the owner does smoke inside, and so all clothes bought will first have to be cleaned to remove the smell of cigarette from them (Insert link to how to do that here)
Genuinely one of the best places to look for nice clothes is the Recessie, and my recommendation is to start here when looking for new "stuff", despite the work of cleaning everything you get there.1

🔦 Laser hair removal
MashaSan https://mashasan.mytreatwell.nl/ I went here about a year ago (2024) to get my legs lasered by this Ukranian lady named Natasha. I paid about ~€120 per session every month or so. That was a lot less than another clinic that I thought of going to. I can't seem to find the pricing on the site though, I'm not sure if they're still doing it.
Cosmetique totale https://www.cosmetique-totale.com/nl-nl/vestigingen/huidtherapie-groningen/ I went to cosmetique totale for facial hair removal, I paid for it out of pocket as the waitinglist was way to long, payed around ~€145,- per session as a package of 6. They were really profesional and quick.

🚆 Voice training

📎 Changing your name at the RUG
Changing your name at the RUG is easy actually, just go to studielink and edit your profile. There is a field for a preferred name. Once you update it, it should mirror into all systems after a couple of days. Your initials and email address will not update, this probably requires a legal name change and contacting the student administration desk or your academic advisor. 3rd party services using the RUG SSO login (like ACLO) may still display your deadname! This can probably be changed by contacting the university.
👂 Earlobe piercing
StudSociety did a good job and were nice, not exactly cheap tho (70€, both ears, basic titanium studs included)
'T oortje also did a very good job (~€65, both ears, standard titanium studs included ), also has a piercer if you want to go for that.
